Benromach wdcs whisky labelBenromach Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Official Whisky of the Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race, have launched an exclusive single cask of Benromach, in a bid to raise funds for the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

Located on the outskirts of the ancient market town of Forres in Speyside is Scotland’s best-kept secret. From a small and almost lost distillery emerged a single malt with distinctive qualities reflecting its exclusive hand-made credentials and encapsulating the sophistication of modern Scotland.

Just two experienced distillers create Benromach using the finest Scottish barley and the purest spring water from the nearby Romach Hills. The bottling strength of 45.7% ABV, equates to 80° using the old imperial measurement for alcohol, thus representing the longitude of WDCS Ecuadorian Project, supporting the Ecuadorian Foundation for the Study of Marine Mammals (FEMM) and their work to develop strategies to protect Ecuadors amazing humpback whales.

The whales migrate between their Antarctic feeding grounds and the coast of Ecuador, Colombia and Panama. During the breeding season the humpbacks swim near to the coast, fostering the development of local community-led whale-watching programmes.

In the last century, humpback whales were almost hunted to extinction and their numbers fell by a staggering 90%. Today, despite a moratorium on commercial whaling, and a ban on international trade in whale products, humpbacks face a real and immediate threat of being added to the list of species already targeted by whaling nations.

The long-term objectives of WDCS and FEMM are to fully understand the state of marine mammals inhabiting Ecuadorian waters, the threats to their survival, and find ways to mitigate them. Light tan in colour, the nose of this fine single malt contains hints of soft delicate fruits - strawberries and raspberries, infused with a toffee sweetness and balanced with a hint of smoke. Creamy and mouth coating, a light honey sweetness develops on the palate, with crisp citrus flavours of oranges and limes.

There are 180 bottles of the Longitude 80 bottling available for sale each retailing at £45.00 per bottle. For every bottle sold, Benromach will donate £5.00 to WDCS for the humpback whale project in Ecuador, each bottle is signed by Keith Cruickshank, Benromach Distillery Manager, and Chris Butler-Stroud, Chief Executive of The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.
