On May the 6th you get to decide what type of Government the UK should have. Various political parties will be courting your vote and there will be a huge range of issues that will be presented to try and persuade you choose one political persuasion or another.
WDCS has no political affiliations and are not setting out to tell you who to vote for. We would say that we believe its right for people to use their right to vote to select the government that you believe will be best for the country, your family and you.
WDCS will work with all elected bodies in order to further whale and dolphin protection.
What WDCS would ask is that if you get the opportunity to talk to your Prospective Members of Parliament here is a list of things that you may wish to ask them about.
Just doing this will raise the profile of whales, dolphins and porpoises and is helpful.
As voters we wish to see the following;
Whaling
- That the UK maintains its strong opposition to any form of commercial whaling.
The UK’s Forgotten cetaceans
- That all the UK’s whales and dolphins should be properly protected from expanding leisure and industrial activities at sea,
- That the harbour porpoise should be given the same level of protection in UK law as the bottlenose dolphin and other cetaceans
Protected areas
- That the Special Areas of Conservation established for bottlenose dolphins in the UK (including that in the Moray Firth) provide a high level of protection for the dolphins throughout their range,
- That the government follows through on its commitment to develop a strong and effective network of Marine Protected Areas, by including all dolphin, porpoise and whale species that could benefit from them; and,
- That the government considers these animals adequately in its environmental decision-making surrounding the development of the marine renewable industry.
Thanks for thinking about the whales and dolphins around our coast
